In order to produce canna hybrids, it is necessary first to find a species that has proven to produce seed that will sprout after two or three weeks after immediate planting after seed formation while still green and fresh. If sprouting is not done early before the brown coating on the seed forms, a hard outer shell resists germination will form, and the seed then may not sprout for a year or two. Once a fertile species female receives pollen from another species or hybrid seed will form.
