The berry size of the Austin Blueberry is large and ranges 20% larger than the "Brightwell" blueberry, and when considering all cultivars of the rabbiteye varieties, the Austin is judged as the best. The new shoots of the Austin blueberry are a bright aqua-green color with bluish overtones and can emerge rapidly during rainy seasons; the foliage is dense, and a cluster of blueberries often can contain 20 or more large berries. When harvesting the Austin Blueberry, the clusters of blueberries can be easily picked off the branches, and that leaves no berry scar when detached. Many new plantings of the Austin blueberry have been made commercially, because the Austin ripens a week earlier than the standard "Brightwell" cultivar, and that brings higher prices in fresh markets.
