Submersum Crinum

Several stems of the 'Submersum' crinum Lily bulb can emerge at once from a single large crinum bulb. This crinum Lily is ideal for planting in the shade at city parks, as well as in outdoor gardens around the home with some shade. The 'Submersum' crinum Lily stems arise from medium sized bulbs that form a clump of erect, wide beautiful green leaves. The flowers are considered by many flower loves to be the most beautiful and widest opening bloom. This crinum is a choice, garden classic and has been handed down by nurseries that are growers of the very oldest crinum cultivars.•   The Submersum Crinum cultivars were named by Lester Hannibal of Fairoaks, Ca., a Crinum group that he felt was a great mystery, because of the huge open faced flowers, slightly striped red or pink, nicely scented, unlike the historical background origins of most hybrid Crinums with a clear record of the originator's breeder. He concluded that the Submersum clones resulted from crossing two widely divergent genetic parents, Crinum moorei and Crinum scabrum, the latter, a fertile clone but shrouded in the mystery of its origin.

•  The 12 Apostles Crinum hybrid lily is an ancient breeding breakthrough that has Crinum bulbispermum as one parent and the other, probably, Crinum americanum, a native to the American rivers. The flower stems are strong and sturdy, it and blooms many times, erratically during the year, topped by an unusual, but not always 12 very potently spicy fragranced, trumpet shaped flowers. This plant is very cold hardy being almost evergreen in zone 8 and survivable in zone 7. The yellow pollen from these flowers is unique in hybrids, seen only in the species, its other parent, Crinum americanum. A similar version of this cultivar is called 'Seven Sisters' that normally grows 7 flowers in an umbel, but the clone is less desirable that the 12 Apostles. This hybrid is in high demand and only available for special request ordering.
